Three meals and a Latte: How to spend a day eating through downtown Charleston

By: Amanda Thomas

With Charleston being the oldest city in South Carolina there are plenty of things to see, do…and eat. That being said, it is so easy to be torn with how to spend your time while visiting the Holy City. Fortunate for me, I had a lot of my plans laid out for me while in town for a friends wedding. With a schedule to keep, most of our meals were planned for us and the ones that weren’t we chose carefully so as to continue in the pattern of treating ourselves before the wedding. While I was there for several days I have narrowed down a list that includes a place to eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a coffee shop all located on or just off of King Street in downtown Charleston.

Breakfast: Kitchen 208IMG_7753

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so when choosing where to grab your early morning eats you should do so carefully. My friends and I chose Kitchen 208 for it’s unique, fresh southern dishes. The breakfast menu includes everything from frittatas to steel cut oats with fresh fruit and honey. Aside from what the dishes are, they also have been given names like the Carriage House and Bridge Runner to reflect the city that you are dining in.

While on my visit to Kitchen 208 I was feeling a little sweet and a little salty, so I IMG_7754opted for the Plantation waffle accompanied by applewood bacon and a hot cup of joe. Plantation was definitely a good name for this dish because the waffle, just like a southern plantation, was grand in size. Just barely fitting on the plate, the golden disc laid with the bacon and cup of syrup hugging the side of the dish. Using my handheld weapons I attacked the fluffy, flaky beast and defeated it in a matter of moments…with the occasional bacon fueled boost between bites. Another bonus to this delicious meal, the prices! Nothing on the menu exceeds ten dollars, and to be eating in downtown Charleston for less than a Hamilton is definitely another reason why you should check out Kitchen 208 for your next casual breakfast spot.

Lunch: King Street Grille

Having had our international food fixes in the past couple of days, we were then craving something hearty, greasy, and good. A friend that use to go to school in Charleston recommended us going to King Street Grille, describing it as ‘amazing bar food’. With my experiences at eating wings and burgers at bars, I knew that that was exactly what the doctor ordered. Walking in to King Street Grille it was the epitome of a sports bar with a long bar against most of the wall on the left and a variety of booths and high tops along the rest of the restaurant. Once we were seated at our table I immediately knew that the waitress was gonna need to give me a minute because everything on that menu was tempting my taste buds. “Do I want pasta…oh but they have sweet tea fried chicken…mmm but those wings look good”. I really didn’t know how I was going to pick just one, but I knew it was going to be one of those decisions where I just decided in the moment whenever the waitress got to me. Sure enough, the waitress came to me last and I went with my gut (and stomach)…blue cheese bacon burger. The burger was described as certified angus beef burger smothered in our signature bleu cheese dressing and topped with bacon served on a warm pretzel roll with seasoned waffle fries. Now while I’ve never been on an online dating site, I felt like I had just swiped right on my meal soul mate.

When the burger finally arrived, I hesitated to even take a bite from it…because IMG_7813it
was just that beautiful. The pretzel roll was glistening with butter and the blue cheese was oozing out underneath the thick cut bacon. It’s beauty almost held me back from eating it…but then I took a picture of it, and everyone knows that a picture lasts longer. The juicy beef mixed with the flavors of the toppings and the bun created a sinfully satisfying symphony in my mouth. So while you’re out doing your shopping, take my advice and drop in to King Street Grille to enjoy one of the best burgers you’ll ever have in your life. Trust me, I’ve had a lot of
burgers.

Coffee: Kudu Coffee & Craft Beer

You’ve already had lunch, but want something to fill and fuel you up until IMG_7812dinnertime? Coffee is always the way to go! Now while I do love Starbucks (Shh, don’t tell anyone!), there’s nothing more enjoyable than a latte in its oversized mug in a relaxed local coffee shop. Just off the beaten path of King Street is Kudu Coffee and Craft Beer. With outdoor and indoor seating, the atmosphere of Kudu is the type of mellow that everyone who is looking to experience a hot (or cold) cup of coffee can enjoy. On this particular visit, it had been raining cats and dogs so we ran inside to escape the rain for a while. While there were numerous drinks to select from, I settled in for a classic mocha latte and it did not disappoint…AND they do latte art, even on to-go orders!

Dinner: Sermets

Now while Sermets probably wouldn’t have been on our normal meal plan, it was chosen for the rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding. The meal was held upstairs and even though we arrived with the bride thirty minutes early, all of the tables and decorations were set up to perfection. Cocktail hour and hors d’oeuvres passed by after thirty minutes and we were all seated at our assigned spots around the room. With the piano being softly played in the background, our first course of a spinach salad was served. IMG_7739Dressed with raspberries, pecans, and balsamic dressing and a hunk of fried goat cheese. This was a salad after my own heart…and the meal didn’t stop there. Once my salad was cleared my entrée arrived shortly in its place. With the invitation to the dinner we were all given the option of chicken, steak, or triggerfish as our entree. Since we were at the beach, I decided to go with the triggerfish. Arriving in a IMG_7740deep dish filled to the brim with grits, my fish and several stalks of asparagus laid perfectly atop in the middle. The flaky, seasoned fish was a perfect match to the crisp vegetable and creamy grits making a well balanced (and completely satisfying) meal. Second courses were cleared and toasts to the soon-to-be Mr. and Mrs. were being made and it arrived. A chocolate-tuxedo cake so tempting with it’s layers of multi-textured goodness it would make the most anti-chocolate person wish they were married to Milton Hershey himself.

IMG_7741

Oh so full from our three courses of pure deliciousness later and we were still caught up in enjoying one another as the staff began to clean. Such a welcoming crew of workers, chefs, and bartenders made the rehearsal dinner a magical night to remember before the big day. While not every night is a rehearsal dinner night, Sermets is the perfect place to enjoy an elegant night out on the town.

With well over a hundred dinning options in downtown Charleston, it’s so hard to decide what will satisfy your hunger. Whatever the time of day, whatever the occasion, whatever the season; hopefully this list tempted your taste buds enough to plan your next trip (and meal) in Charleston. While it might not be for a few months until I’m back in the presence of Rainbow Row, I hold with me the memories of this trip celebrating two people I love dearly and eating my way through downtown.

Livin’ La Vida Loca (l)

By: Amanda Thomas

If you ever travel with me, you need to know that I expect to eat local whenever I travel. Don’t even bother asking if I want to go to Longhorn or Outback for a steak, because you are going to hear the same answer I tell everyone; “ If I wanted that I could eat it at home”. Even with that being said, rarely do I choose a chain restaurant when given the option. I believe that local food is the best food for several reasons. For one, you are supporting local business and without local business you probably wouldn’t be enjoying whatever city you are in as much without local business. Secondly, I enjoy knowing what is in my meal and nine times out of ten the food you eat locally is going to be prepared to order using fresh ingredients. And lastly, I just believe in trying new foods and what better way to do that than eating what the locals eat! Supporting local business has been a huge push over the last few years and I believe in the local business movement because it is the core of people finding their dreams and themselves and then sharing their talent or passion with others…locally!

Support local business rant over…and now onto the food. I currently find myself with my family at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina for some quality beach time. While at the beach, naturally, I want all the fresh seafood money can buy. Enjoying the beaches of Hilton Head since I was a little girl, I’ve had my fair share of food here, and on this trip had the privilege to enjoy some favorites and try some new. This list is just a small portion of some of my favorite local eating’s from this trip.

  1. The Sea ShackIMG_7686

My aunt introduced me to the Sea Shack about five years ago and in her description she included those tantalizing words I love so much, “this is where the locals eat.”

SOLD!

IMG_7688            On the same street as several businesses and law firms, there stands the small building with the small identification sign in front. Not quite a shack, but a small building none the less. With the line far out the door and no sign of secret “Is this really worth the wait” glances; you know the food has to be good. Operating from 11-3 for lunch and then 5-9 for dinner there is virtually no ‘best’ time to go because there is always going to be a line…words I heard directly from one of the head cooks themselves. On this particular visit we arrived just before two and the line indeed looked just as long. Waiting in the sweltering beach humidity for over an hour, and we finally made our way into the air conditioning.

With more than enough time to review the glossed over food magazine I had retrieved in line, we had the menu memorized and were prepared to order. Opting for my recent seafood guilty pleasure, I ordered the scallop platter (grilled) with cole slaw and the potato of the day; parmesan mashed potatoes. Once seated at our table in the front corner of the restaurant, we were able to relish in our ability to make it just in time before lunch closed and fully appreciate the effect of air conditioning. Five perfectly grilled scallops, a heaping pile of potatoes, a scoop of cole slaw, and two golf ball sized hushpuppies all in their appropriate section of my black Styrofoam plate. Not knowing what to bite into first…I go for the main event…the scallops. With a thin layer of crispness on either side IMG_7689and nothing but flaky-juicy goodness on the inside, I was definitely pleased with my choice of having it grilled. Immediately after finishing that first scallop I am able to investigate my sides. Fresh made cole slaw with crisp cabbage complimented by a light mayonnaise based sauce, the perfect cole slaw for a scallop companion. The mashed potatoes fully satisfying with the light texture and subtle, but definitely present, taste of parmesean cheese mixed in. But the hush puppies…oh the hush puppies! My absolute favorite part of any by-the-beach meal, are definitely done justice at the Sea Shack. Extra crispy on the outside, fluffy and corn sprinkled on the inside. The perfect late lunch meal at a well worth the wait dive buried in the heart of Hilton Head.

  1. Hudson’s

IMG_7694 Located right on the waterfront, Hudson’s is known best for their ridiculously fresh seafood. So fresh, that you can all but see the fishermen bringing in their catch to go straight from the ocean to your dinner plate. Classic seaside outdoor seating on a deck or indoor seating reminiscent of an oversized ship, complete with wooden floors and light wooden seating; either option ideal for relaxing before you are served your feast. Numerous daily specials prepared from the fisherman’s recent catch adorn the menu, as well as some of their everyday meals. My meal began with two appetizers; fried green tomatoes and bling bling shrimp. The fried green tomatoes were fried to perfection and joined by a delicious creamy, spicy, ranch. The shrimp had the perfect amount of spice and kick and was matched perfectly atop a bed of fresh cole slaw. With such a bounty to begin the meal, I opted to share my entrée with my IMG_7691dad in order to not over indulge. With that said, we decided on the Neptune platter which included scallops, oysters, shrimp, deviled crab, the fresh catch of the day, a side, and two hush puppies…definitely not over indulging. Having everything except the scallops fried (scallops were pan-seared), everything was exceptionally fresh and definitely satisfied my fresh seafood quest.

  1. Giuseppi’s

Pizza at the beach…what??? Yep, that’s right! While I do crave seafood near the ocean, if you ever go to Hilton Head getting a pizza from Giuseppi’s is a must. Their pizza is super fresh and has that delicious, gooey, pulls when you take a bite  of it cheese that brings out the inner child of any gourmet eater. While I normally give my pizza quite the up-do with specialty toppings, at Giuseppi’s I keep it classic-pepperoni IMG_7685pizza. Their pepperoni pizza honestly comes close, if not rivals, some of the slices I’ve had in other big cities like New York. Add a side Greek salad, and you have yourself a delicious meal after a long day at the beach. Wanna know the best part? They deliver!

The beach is the ultimate cherry atop anyone’s perfect summer. Laying on the sand reading a new book, biking under the palm trees, and eating food like you’ll never eat again. It’s something we all look forward to every year when the temperature rises; we pack our bags and head to the coast. Well, the next time you’re near the beach, the mountains, or just out on the town for that matter, I encourage you to explore some local eating and enjoy the freshness that comes with supporting a local business!

The Ultimate Coconut Cake

By: Amanda Thomas

Spending the weekend at the beach to help settle a few last minute details for an upcoming wedding landed myself, two friends, and one soon to be mother in law in the streets of downtown Charleston. Peninsula Grill had already been deemed our destination for dinner, so we decided to stop by early to make a reservation. Once we left the hostess stand and made our way through the enchanted outdoor walkway, I couldn’t help but notice a tour group stopped on the main sidewalk. The walking tour guide was talking to the group about our chosen meal venue when I heard him say, “I’ve heard several people say you should never call anything ultimate unless it truly is ultimate, and here at the Peninsula Grill they have THE ultimate coconut cake…” Well if it’s being shown by a tour guide, it appears we have chosen wisely.

After a few hours of light King Street shopping we return to the restaurant ready for dinner. Unfortunately they were not able to take reservations, but they assured us that the wait time wouldn’t be too long for a table outside in the warm Charleston air. Lucky for us, the bar was right beside the hostess standIMG_0561

Immediately after settling in our sleek bar stools, one of the two bartenders offered to take our shopping bags and store them for us until we are finished with our meal. Once the visual of our moneybags was removed we were able to discuss specialty cocktails and recommendations with our new friend, the bartender. With sleepy eyes we ask for something that will awaken us so that we can fully enjoy the night and he quickly recommended their house Paloma. Three Palomas’ and a grey goose martini ordered, and our night was off to a riveting start already.

FullSizeRender-4 After our cocktails we decided to order a bottle of wine to share, but unable to make a decision we once again called upon our new friend. He kindly offered to bring out the house sommelier to further discuss our likes and dislikes in order to help us select the perfect bottle for us. After much discussion the sommelier recommended a bottle that he has recently found love with, that seemed to peek all of our interests. Once the bottle was popped and four glasses poured, we were all satisfied with the selection. A smooth, distinctive red that would turn any white wine lover into a red wine addict within one sip.

Soon after our first glass of wine was poured, it was time to be seated for our upcoming feast. The hostess guided us outside to small-gated patio that was drenched in southern greenery. Our quant round table and iron swirled seats awaited us towards the farther section of the patio. Once we were seated and our napkins laid and folded into our laps the waiter quickly filled our water goblets and recited the daily specials for us. Eyes wide and stomachs growling we listened to his poetic descriptions and we were already prepared to order. Three of us decided to go with the heirloom tomato-goat cheese-balsamic salad and an order of oysters Rockefeller to share. For entrees, the four of us were split between the land and the sea. Two opted for the New York Strip, another the triggerfish, and as for me…I went for the seductive pan roasted jumbo sea scallops. We were giddy just ordering it all.

Our oysters arrived prior to our salads on a saucer with four large oyster shells covered with gooey arugula and asiago and herbs. The oysters were devoured in the blink of an eye, just in time for our salads…and a fresh bottle of wine. The salad was a dressed garden in a deep bowl of protection. Large slivers of heirloom tomatoes, halves of grapevine tomatoes, diced cucumbers, and delicate spheres of goat cheese all generously doused in homemade balsamic dressing. The perfect combination of elegance and freshness for a warm May night in the south.

Only a few moments for our stomachs to rest, and the entrees were presented to us. I IMG_7153wish I could tell you that all of our meals arrived beautifully, but I was too star struck with my own plate to even notice the initial reveal of the others. Four glorious scallops laid in a sea of creamy, braised buttered lettuce, savory chunks of lobster, and garlic chive mashed potatoes, all topped with a citrus lobster broth. Romeo and Juliet have nothing on this plate and myself because this was indeed, love at first sight.

That first bite into scallop was the type of bite that makes you bring one hand to your chest, close your eyes, lean your head back and “mmm” as you chew…and that is exactly what I did. The scallop was seared to perfection so that each flakey bite was packed full of delicious flavor. The next bite was a fork-full of lettuce, lobster, and potatoes that blended together like two ballroom dancers born to waltz together. Everything about this meal spoke to me deep down in my soul…and my overly satisfied stomach.

A clean plate and a few sly bites of steak later, my dinner was coming to a close. But wait…we still have to have coconut cake! There was no physical possibility of all of us having our own slice, but one large slice to share and a bottle of champagne to seal it all together. The champagne label was presented  and the plate laid in the middle of us. Sitting up straight and tall, the cake was beautiful. Immediately you can see the six separate layers of the cake creating a geometrically perfect vision; cake, icing, cake, icing. To complete the food presentation, the cake was accompanied by sliced strawberries and drizzles of white and milk chocolate on the side.  Pop, fizzle, clink and time for that first bite. As I begin to life my fork with the snowflake white cake attached I start to think to myself, ‘There’s no way that this is that ultimate. This simply can’t be better than my meal, or my salad, or the oysters!’ I continue to lift IMG_7154my fork closer and closer to my slightly parted mouth until suddenly there it is. That is the moment I tasted the ultimate coconut cake. It was moist, it was soft, it was creamy, it was flavorful…it was everything anyone could ever want a cake to be, and with four forks attacking it like a lion pack after it’s prey, it was gone all too quick.

Plates were being cleared and we knew that our dinning experience was coming to an end before our eyes. Our stomachs layered like lasagna with our different courses and the wine between and blended in. We go back inside to retrieve our rested shopping bags and make our way to the car. I take one look back at the spot we resided at for the past two hours and the memories that had just bloomed over that small table. Food gone too quickly but moments that will last a lifetime, but the real lesson of this story: Always listen to your tour guide.
